Frederica is a Regency romance novel by Georgette Heyer. The story is set in The plot is typical of several later Heyer romances in counterpointing the. After reading Frederica I thanked my lucky stars that Georgette Heyer was such a prolific writer and that she lived a long life. She wrote over I am coming to Heyer in the opposite way, after reading countless romances, including many Regencies. Frederica is the first book I have read by Georgette.

I adored this book. Besides, I don’t want to be accused of being a bluestocking. In hyer words, the more I relate to Frederica, the more I love Alverstoke. There’s a hot air balloon adventure with the young brother georgwtte a dog Marvelously fun! I also adore Lord Alverstoke Like Like. Luff, the family’s beloved pet, had “forgot himself amongst the cows in Green Park” and fearing he would be impounded, Frederica manufactured a tale for this irate and ultimately unconvinced group that Luff was a rare breed of Barcelona collie, owned by the Marquis and only trying to herd the cows as he had been bred to do.
Felix Merrivile, her year-old brother, is crazy about mechanics, engineering, aeronautics, steam engines, hot air balloons, explosives, etc. Whether I radiate those things like I wish to those around me, I don’t know! And I didn’t care much for the social side of it.
The way the boys capture his heart is lovely. My favorite part of the book, however, is how little self-aware Frederica is.
I am in love! Felix is like no other child in GH; Charis, although beautiful and dim like The Foundling, is able to design and sew beautiful clothes. You can see how deeply important these two boys are to Frederica and it’s clear georgftte she couldn’t possibly abandon them to their negligent oldest brother—which means that anybody who can’t love them as well has no chance of winning her heart.
Plus, fredwrica ending wasn’t all that fluppery “everything-works-out-perfectly. He looks to be so bored, removed, etc. His vocalization of the marquess is a bit stuffier than I would like, and occasionally he veers off into Winston Churchill territory, but he does a very nice job with all of the female voices and especially with the two cute young boys who, for my money, make this a standout book.

gerogette It never struck me before in previous reads, but this time around, I noticed the emphasis on family and familial differences. The scraps the boys and even Frederica go into were funny, the characters well done, and overall Frederica is one of my favorite Heyer novels.
She was charming and well-behaved, yet also independent and determined. I swear if Felix actually spoke in the near-lisping Little Lord Fauntleroy accents used here, he’d have been shoved under the heysr of a carriage long ago.
I even like Charis, much as she’d drive me nuts if she were my sister. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. I like the way all the family members are developed.
However, her beauty and artless manners make her an instant success. She mentions that her father was a cousin of his. When the Marquess visits Frederica’s rented house in an unsophisticated neighborhood, he meets Frederica, a twenty-four-year-old spinster in charge of nineteen-year-old Charis, geoorgette Jessamy, and twelve-year-old Felix.

Oh, no, actually, Lord Alverstoke knows wayyyyyy more than I do! And for a first Heyer, it was amazing. Another favourite of mine. It leaves room for the imagination, without offending or irritating any attachments you might have developed for the characters. I mean after this, my expectation will be unusually high whenever I pick up a Heyer book. Books by Georgette Heyer. But, he is very amused by Frederica and sees an excellent opportunity to royally piss off his sisters, so he agrees and let the drama begin!
Characterization is top notch. He heyeer merely to spite his sister Louisa, who has been plaguing him to give a ball for the come-out of her oldest daughter. I do so love this book.
I’ll get my reasons out of the way before I go on to the book’s many positives.
