True art is introducing hundred characters but making them all stand out, something that the reader will remember no matter what. However, instead of being charmed, I felt bored most of the times, even tired.

Because this book is about artists and their obsessions, it is appropriate then that Kostova writes with a painterly eye. The majority of the book comprises the memories and insights of these people told in the voice of that particular individual, and so takes place outside the narrative which is really a convenient framework for these first person interludes.

Kostova creates interest and intrigue through the beauty of her writing to keep the reader entertained rather than through the creation of leizabeth events and occurrences however, I readily admit that I also have a love for the sorts of books that are packed with action and adventure, meaning that my comments are in no way meant to be regarded in a negative way.
But the others were marvelous.

Marlow’s quest to cure this one patient leads him from DC to North Carolina, New York City, and Paris, all the while wondering if this man is insane or simply misunderstood. Subtle and sweeping, the novel of painters and their lives quivers with the life that Kostova says painters strive to evoke in their works.

After reading most of the reviews here, I believe many read this book with a firm vision on how it should have been written based on her first novel. Very different from her first work and should be regarded entirely on its own merits.
There is a mystery to be solved, but Robert Oliver, the person with the answers, comes to a point in his life — his emotional illness — that his only weapon against the obsession shredding his soul is silence.
