Sir Sparhawk is an interesting character and his interactions with his fellow Pandion knights are some of the best. And it’s an entertaining adventure – let me start by establishing that. A deep enchantment sustains her life, but it will end soon.
Oh, the casual racism… ALEX: The Elenium The Tamuli. We have the discovery of the hero and the destiny, the peril, the item of power and the quest to obtain it, the great evil, the personal rival, and all the layers upon layers of worldbuilding that come with the classic Eddings formula. What I love about David Eddings is that he creates such likable characters, reading about Sparhawk, Kurik, Kalten and company is always very entertaining, the banter between them all is funny and seems to be one of his key tools in chracterization. It’s derivative of previous fantasy works. David Eddings is comfort reading of the highest order okay, I will admit that I stopped reading him after a certain point, but this series was before that point, so!
The characters are two dimensional and perfect. The lore of Bhelliom was all over the place, with no real example of its power. It hooks you in the beginning, but the quality of the writing just descends into nonsense and purple prose as it goes on. To my knowledge, Eddings never made such a proposition. The Elenium is focused on Sparhawk, who is a 40ish knight with a hell of a lot of experience in contrast to the Belgariad, which is a pure bildungsroman. This has bits of that but somehow pales into insignificance next to it.
That romance between Sparhawk and Ehlana just bothers me. He has been around a long time, and is quite cynical in his outlook.
But then the Voidbringers assaulted and captured heaven, casting out God and men. The Voyage South Seymour Hamilton 8.
I don’t yhe my husband had an issue with this because he is a very careful reader, but I like to read quickly and found it frustrating to have to go backwards to figure out who was speaking!
I enjoyed the Elenium – it’s a fun, fast paced read that has the main characters bounce from one crisis to the next. D The Diamond Throne does a great job of setting up the world of The Elenium with us been introduced to the order of the various Knights as well as the political structure that is heavily based on mediaeval Europe’s feudal culture that with a few more democratic processes in place!
