Sir Sparhawk is an interesting character and his interactions with his fellow Pandion knights are some of the best. And it’s an entertaining adventure – let me start by establishing that. A deep enchantment sustains her life, but it will end soon.

Oh, the casual racism… ALEX: The Elenium The Tamuli. We have the discovery of the hero and the destiny, the peril, the item of power and the quest to obtain it, the great evil, the personal rival, and all the layers upon layers of worldbuilding that come with the classic Eddings formula. But phrases like these start to feel old hat – repeated about as often as, “You can bet your sweet bippie,” was repeated on Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-in. There is something to be said for the style of writing.

This leaves one possibility: Typically, quest adventures like to run with someone much younger and malleable, so the mix-up here is refreshing. He eleniuj flushing the fuel tank of the car with water when he lit a piece of paper and threw into the puddle to test if it was still flammable. Also, no one reads Eddings for revolutionary plot, narrative wonder or astounding insights into the human condition.

We were ten when we began this search, so now we have to be the same ten every step of the way. In an ancient kingdom, the legacy of one royal family hangs in the balance, and the fate of a queen-and her empire-lies on the shoulders of one knight.

What I love about David Eddings is that he creates such likable characters, reading about Sparhawk, Kurik, Kalten and company is always very entertaining, the banter between them all is funny and seems to be one of his key tools in chracterization. It’s derivative of previous fantasy works. David Eddings is comfort reading of the highest order okay, I will admit that I stopped reading him after a certain point, but this series was before that point, so!

The characters are two dimensional and perfect. The lore of Bhelliom was all over the place, with no real example of its power. It hooks you in the beginning, but the quality of the writing just descends into nonsense and purple prose as it goes on. To my knowledge, Eddings never made such a proposition. The entirety of this novel concerns the search Sparhawk and his companions make for this powerful relic.

I would highly recommend these stories to anyone from my mother to my daughter. If you must listen you can speed the narrator up to a more human sound, but still I’d recommend avoiding it all together. Having written two, five part fantasy epics using the same characters, the same setting, and the same plot, he realized it was a time for a change. It was a dull read despite the new episode of action or intrigue seeming to occur every twenty to fifty pages. Because of the speed-up during traveling I lost sense of time.

The Elenium is focused on Sparhawk, who is a 40ish knight with a hell of a lot of experience in contrast to the Belgariad, which is a pure bildungsroman. This has bits of that but somehow pales into insignificance next to it.

That romance between Sparhawk and Ehlana just bothers me. He has been around a long time, and is quite cynical in his outlook.

But then the Voidbringers assaulted and captured heaven, casting out God and men. The Voyage South Seymour Hamilton 8.

I don’t yhe my husband had an issue with this because he is a very careful reader, but I like to read quickly and found it frustrating to have to go backwards to figure out who was speaking!

I enjoyed the Elenium – it’s a fun, fast paced read that has the main characters bounce from one crisis to the next. D The Diamond Throne does a great job of setting up the world of The Elenium with us been introduced to the order of the various Knights as well as the political structure that is heavily based on mediaeval Europe’s feudal culture that with a few more democratic processes in place!
