Once more Gaunt and his Ghosts find themselves fighting against impossible odds as they are sent the hive city of Vervunhive, which is under attack from what seems to be one of the hive’s greedy rivals.

He has also set up the next couple novels well, and opened up more than a few possible routes for the series to take. A hive city falls under siege and Gaunt’s Ghost’s are sent to help defend it. The first 40 pages or so are spent giving you the lay of the land with the hive city and its citizens, then it’s pretty much bloody knuckles and broken teeth from there on out.


Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt was one of the last people to leave the planet before its demise, and was saved by a youth called Brin Milo, whom he took with him in gratitude. As in all of the Warhammer 40K books I’ve so far read, this one is full of mind-numbing violence and cruelty.

Necropolis is, hands down, one of the best purely military SF novels I’ve ever read.

All in all, I found the book interesting. When informing Gaunt of his demotion, Van Voytz tells him that the Tanith was “[his] last command”.

When Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt was sent to Tanith to oversee the founding of these regiments, he was not impressed by the appearance of the men, initially describing them as “a scrawny, scruffy mob of soft-voiced woodsmen”. Ibram Gaunt – sexy as hell in his uniform, with scars which push the sexy overbrave, impossible to kill, carrying but strict with his surroundings and despite lady one night friend one would question his preferences Gaunt forces his way up to Sondar’s chambers with a strike force of Royal Volpone, accompanied by Sturm and Kowle.
