Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce was an American editorialist, journalist, short story writer, fabulist and satirist. As I was reading it, I kept thinking these men were ghosts and that the child was somehow able to see them. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. To say more would spoil it.

But you’ll see nothing of the battle in this story. The high interest audio production promotes enthusiastic responses from students. It was kind of slow and I didn’t understand it while Chockamauga was reading that first time.

A little boy goes wondering in the woods, gets lost overnight, and stumbles upon a very strange and somewhat horrifying spectacle of the night. To do this, he describes the perspective of an uncomprehending toddler who comes upon the retreat by chance. Bierce himself fought at the Battle of Chickamauga, which must of been a great shock to him as the Civil War was the first, and only time these united Americans would pillage and murder each other on such a large scale.
The contrast in how the boy sees what is happening with the adult’s understanding of the horror involved is striking, and memorable. This is represented through the image of the mother, whose brains are leaking from her skull after being raped by a gang of soliders.

He then takes chicmamauga wooden sword and “leads” them. The child apparently lost his mother in the battle, and he too became a victim of the war. This was a profoundly moving story about how in war there are no heroes. Dec 18, Althea Ann rated it it was ok.
